Acoustic panels for theatres: the new Espacio Escénico Ciudad de Maracena

The use of acoustic panels for theatres makes more sense than ever in this type of cultural facility. Theatres are used for performing plays that are conveyed to the audience through speech and music, sometimes even without the reinforcement of loudspeakers, and this requires perfect acoustics. The town of Maracena, Granada longed for a new theatre and, a few weeks ago, they inaugurated Espacio Escénico Ciudad de Maracena in the historic neighbourhood of San Nicolás, one of the oldest in the town. The new multi-purpose building boasts a built area of over 4,000 m² that includes a large foyer, fenced outdoor space, 602 m² of multi-purpose rooms and a main auditorium with 382 seats (plus four spaces for people with reduced mobility) and a 200-m² stage. Spigogroup was pleased to be involved in the project with the manufacture and supply of 2,000 m² of Spigoacustic sound-absorbent wood acoustic panels. Specifically, they were panels of the Spigoacustic Liso and Spigoacustic 28-16-64 models, in 2400 x 600 mm acoustic tiles, manufactured with MDF with B-s1,d0 fire performance and finished with 16 mm Atlas wenge melamine. The installation method employs a convenient tongue-and-groove system on a substructure of standard wooden battens anchored to the wall. What is the fire performance of Spigogroup's B-s1-d0 wood acoustic panels?

As part of our process of continuous improvement of services and materials, Spigogroup has improved the fire performance of our wood acoustic panels and cladding. For years they have had B-s2-d0 certification, which guaranteed excellent fire protection properties, but now, after new improvements, they will boast B-s1-d0 certification. So what are the features of Spigogroup's B-s1-d0 wood acoustic panels now? The standard that refers to the fire performance of wood acoustic panels and cladding is UNE-EN 13501, which lists the Euroclasses or classification of materials used in construction according to their flammability, smoke emission and particulate production. For each of these three criteria the standard specifies different scales: F to A1 for flammability, s3 to s1 for smoke emission and d2 to d0 for production of droplets and/or particles.     Thus, our B-s1-d0 wood acoustic panels and cladding have the following characteristics: B: this means that they provide a very limited contribution to the fire, i.e. when they burn they provide virtually no fuel. s1: this means that they make little smoke. d0: this indicates that, when they burn, they do not release droplets or particles that could fall on other elements. European wood acoustic panels? Is wood from European forests better? Why? Some customers ask us about where we source the wood used to manufacture our acoustic panels and wood cladding. This is a detail that is becoming increasingly important, not only because of a commitment to the use of European products, but also because of the advantages this brings from the point of view of sustainability. The wood we use at Spigogroup is mostly of European provenance, because our main wood suppliers source their raw material from European forests:   This means a reduction in transport costs compared to timber from further afield, as well as a significant reduction in the transport-related carbon footprint.   Moreover, using European wood is a commitment to local products, which helps to generate employment and economic growth in our area.   Finally, we have to bear in mind that using European timber promotes the increase of forest area dedicated to sustainable forest management, which benefits the environment.   In addition, all the wood that arrives at our facilities is PEFC or FSC certified. The adoption of these stamps also prevents the use and promotion of illegally cut timber.
